Iggy Pop is under the spell of the Unknowns. The American rocker broadcast their hit on the BBC It’s you that I lovea parody of alternative groups from the 1990s, such as Mano Negra.

The Negra Bouch’ Beat finally broadcast on the BBC. The singer Iggy Pop spent this Sunday June 16 in his music show on BBC Radio 6 Music the cult song It’s you that I love strangers.

“It was Les Inconnus,” Iggy Pop explained after the song. “It’s a French comedy troupe. Together they made this humorous album. It’s a parody of French punk groups.”

“A French friend of mine sent it to me. It’s a strange song, where the protagonist lists all the ways he will change to obtain the object of his desire. At one point he says, ‘I won’t piss no more in the sink'”, pronouncing this phrase in French, with relish before translating it for English-speaking listeners.

“Have you ever made sacrifices?”

And Iggy Pop added: “People ask me: ‘have you ever made similar sacrifices for love? Well, no. Not at all. Sometimes I make a little effort to make it work out but never for love .”

The sharp and eclectic playlist of Iggy Pop’s show also included the title Urban Metalby the French punk rock band Panik, and the song I’ll be seeing you, his duet with Françoise Hardy. He paid tribute to the late singer on June 11 in a tweet.

Made in 1991, the music video for It’s you that I love is one of the most popular and famous sketches of Les Inconnus – aka Bernard Campan, Didier Bourdon and Pascal Légitimus. This is a parody of alternative groups like Mano Negra.

More than 30 years after their broadcast, between 1990 and 1993 on Antenne 2 then France 2, the Inconnus sketches are still a reference. In 2022, TF1 broadcast the TV film All Unknown where around sixty personalities reenacted 19 of their sketches.
