At the Governors Awards of the American Academy, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli will be rewarded for their entire career in the service of 007. Whose next incarnation is still awaited…

A family matter. Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, half-brother and sister, have been watching over the adventures of James Bond for three decades. From GoldenEye, released in 1995, they took over from historic producer Albert Broccoli, Barbara’s father. They have supervised in recent years Quantum of Solace, Sky Fallwhich grossed a billion dollars in 2012 or, more recently, in 2021, Dying can wait.

Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli will be awarded an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards. This price “testifies to their success as producers of the hugely popular Bond saga and their contribution to the cinematic landscape”producer and Academy president Janet Yang said in a statement.

Michael G. Wilson, who joined the production of James Bond in the 1970s as a lawyer, and Barbara Broccoli, whose Bond memories date back to the filming of Dr No in 1963, will receive their honorary Oscar on November 17. The Governors Awards, a ceremony of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, honor four veterans of the film industry each year, who have not always been recognized at the regular Oscars.

No news from James Bond

Richard Curtis, British director known for Love at first sight in Notting Hill Or Four weddings and a funeral, will also be rewarded there this year. Just like Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson’s composer, nominated seven times for the Oscars for his work on soundtracks, without ever leaving with a statuette. The last person to be honored was casting director Juliet Taylor, who notably worked on Taxi Driver And Schindler’s List.

The reward awarded to the producers of James Bond comes as the character of 007 has still not found a new actor to take on his costume. His latest face, Daniel Craig, hung up his gloves in 2021 after the release of Dying can wait, the 25th opus of the saga. Despite intense speculation, no replacement has been officially announced.

In the meantime, Amazon has bought MGM, the studio behind the James Bond saga. The Broccoli family company, Eon, however, retains broad creative control over the franchise, based on the novels of British writer Ian Fleming. For now, to the great dismay of fans, it maintains suspense over the future of the adventures of the most famous spy in the world.
