The Rio Loco Festival started on June 12. Still located at the Prairie des Filters, it is one of the unmissable events in the Pink City. Despite this great success, local residents reiterate their concern about the installations which are damaging the park.

Rugby World Cup, Rio Loco and soon Toulouse Plages. The list of cultural events is growing and this is increasingly disturbing the residents of the Prairie des Filters. Not only is the noise level high but the park is regularly subject to the passage of heavy goods vehicles transporting the infrastructure, deplore some of the residents. “Rio Loco is gaining space from year to year” affirms Jean-Claude Coustel, member of Friends of the Earth.

“The landscape is broken”

“A green space in Toulouse is air, oxygen, shade,” says Patrick Coste. A member of the collective of residents of the Prairie des Filters, he owns an apartment located just opposite the park. After each major event, the site must be restored. And Patrick Coste did the accounts. He estimates that the park is accessible for local residents at “eight weeks” a year. For him, Toulouse Plages, which will take place this year from July 20 to August 25, is also part of the problem. “When they install these games, they contribute to destroying the garden,” he notes before confessing that “the landscape is broken.” Like other local residents, he questions the legitimacy of the location for such events. “A garden is not made to have a funfair for so much time in the year,” underlines the member of the collective.

Still a sound problem

“I’m enjoying the festival from my bed!” jokes Patrick Coste, who has worked in the cultural field and still appreciates the artists who perform at the festival. But he says he puts “plugs and headphones” in his ears every day because of the decibels. Even if, for him, it was the noise coming from the 2023 Rugby World Cup fan zone that proved to be “hell”. As for Toulouse town hall, we are highlighting the steps taken in recent years. Francis Grass, deputy mayor in charge of Culture, would like to point out that an “innovative system has been put in place to channel the bass”. This experiment allows “to prevent the bass from being scattered everywhere,” he continues.

For the moment, access to the Prairie desfilters has been closed since May 28 until June 21. As for Cours Dillon, the space has been inaccessible since June 3. It will also be reopened on June 21.
