Antwerp: 4 new products to discover on the sidelines of Design Week

The collaboration between Ethnicraft and the Modern Shapes gallery

Since its creation 25 years ago, the Belgian label Ethnicraft has established itself as a must-have in the world of decoration, particularly in wooden furniture. Real expertise based on artisanal manufacturing methods, which the brand has put at the service of an artistic project. Ethnicraft is indeed joining forces with the Antwerp gallery Modern Shapes, specialized in contemporary and modern sculptural art, on the occasion of the “Modern Shapes Editions” project. The works of around ten artists, represented by the gallery, were selected and reinterpreted into solid wood creations, handcrafted in the Ethnicraft workshops. An artisanal and original counterpart, which celebrates the know-how and spirit of the two entities. Each wooden work of art is available in limited edition and presented, within the Modern Shapes gallery, alongside its original.

It’s the city’s unmissable hot spot. In the heart of Antwerp, the St. Vincents gallery, led by Henri Delbarre and Geraldine Jackman, stands out for its sensitive and very poetic curation around collectible design and emerging or more established artists. Currently, the duo presents the second edition of the Edits series, designed by interior designer and wood turner Mario Vanwynsberghe. The creative transforms fallen or neglected trees into unique delicate objects, sublimating each roughness or imperfection of the material thanks to textile scars. A raw and sensitive ensemble to discover alongside the most beautiful pieces in the gallery, superbly presented between the walls of this former 18th century printing works.

The “Diaphonia” exhibition by Nathalie Van der Massen at La Collection

Founded in 2017 by Florence Cools, the fashion label The Collection gives life to refined and sometimes monastic slender silhouettes, which give pride of place to worked cuts as well as noble and natural materials: silk, wool, linen, cashmere. An elegant wardrobe where the founder’s love for art, crafts and fabrics shines through. A shared passion with the textile designer Nathalie Van der Massen, which pushed the two women to collaborate together. They are thus presenting, in the brand’s Antwerp boutique, the “Diaphonia” exhibition, visible until July 27, 2024. The large works and textile installations of Nathalie Van der Massen are thus presented alongside fashion pieces, thus initiating a real dialogue between the different creations. For the occasion, the two women even imagined hand in hand a work of art to wear: a large cape woven from cotton wool designed in Belgium and available in three numbered copies.

The “Botanical Writing” exhibition at the Valérie Traan gallery

Until June 29, 2024, the Valerie Traan gallery presents the very beautiful exhibition “Botanical Writing”, dedicated to the work of the artist Chris Meulemans and the sculptor Johan Gelper. A successful staging, which brings together sculptures made from recovered materials and simply assembled without being fixed, and very beautiful small colorful painted works as well as collages. Two instinctive practices, which echo the principle of automatic writing, to which the title of the exhibition also echoes. Chris Meulemans and Johan Gelper also demonstrate a shared passion for nature and plants, which infuses this entire exhibition. Do not miss.
