With their long red capes, the knights of the brotherhood of herring and scallops from Dieppe (Seine-Maritime) are instantly recognizable. It must be said that this Sunday November 10, 2024this particularity is very practical to differentiate them among the uniforms of the 11 other brotherhoods invited on the occasion of the 29e chapter of the Dieppe institution.

An annual chapter which is generally held a week before the herring fair and which is also an opportunity to induct new members.

14 new members

There are 14 of them who have joined the brotherhood responsible for promoting local products and particularly “the herring king and the shell queen”.

Fourteen new knights who are well-known characters in the city like Thibaut Peyrefortpresident of the Vos belles boutiques association in Dieppe or members of other brotherhoods like Laurence Féry, who came as a friend of the Boudin blanc brotherhood of Soulancourt-sur-Mouzon.

A mandatory rite of passage

The induction ceremony always follows the same obligatory rites of passage. First, the grand master Francis Chéron welcomes all those present before the grand chamberlain, Luc Chevaucherie, quotes the brotherhood’s poem. Then, the treasurer of the brotherhood, Claude Dunet, presents each of the new knights. Finally, they must taste a piece of herring and shell before the traditional convivial meal. To date, the herring and scallop brotherhood of Dieppe has more than 120 members.

The 14 new members: Jacques Bodelet, Isabelle Curie, Laurence Féry, Alain Gérard, Jean-Bernard Guichard, Laurent Lamulle, Dany Leylavergne, Pierre Manoury, Bruno Michelli, Maurice Miny, Thibaut Peyrefort, Alain Planquais, Frédéric Thill, Annie Werpin.
