Selestat. World music with Nouffissa Kabbou at l’Évasion

Originally from a family of Bedouins from the south-east of the Moroccan Sahara, Noufissa Kabbou has always been singing, lulled by Sahrawi songs played in the family and particularly by brotherhoods of women percussionists to which her mother and sisters belong.

She immersed herself in Berber music from the Middle Atlas where she spent a large part of her adolescence, but also that of Oum Kalthoum, Marcel Khalifa, Fayrouz and Ismahane.

Arriving in France in 2000 to continue her studies in sociology of education, after having trained in philosophy and sociology in Morocco, she met the guitarist Emmanuel Simula. Self-taught with a passion for white music (pop, rock, contemporary music) and black music (Africa, America and the Caribbean), he then evolved in world music and French song groups.

Noufissa Kabbou’s songs abolish cultural boundaries and create bridges between musical styles that can seem very distant. These similarities or connections give rise to an original, surprising and familiar musical expression.

Noufissa Kabbou writes poetic and committed texts which are chronicles, speak of love, the quest for freedom or violated rights. Introspective, biographical or descriptive, they are rooted in the poetry, music and daily life of her country of origin that Noufissa Kabbou invites you to discover.

At L’Évasion de Sélestat, Friday June 14 at 8 p.m. Price: €9. Reservations 03 88 85 03 86.
