30 years after “Sister Act 2”, the third part of the saga with Whoopi Goldberg should indeed see the light of day soon. One of the actresses confirmed that the script was ready.

The cult film Sister Act 2 is 30 years old and the actresses of the film celebrated this anniversary very recently with great emotion.

Is the project for a third part still alive? The answer is yes ! In the pipeline for many years, a remake was first considered for a long time, before Whoopi Goldberg confirmed in 2020 that a sequel was instead being considered.

In the two films released in 1992 and 1994, Whoopi played the role of the unforgettable Dolores Van Cartier, forced to join a convent of nuns to escape gangsters.

“It’s still relevant! It’s under development. The studio [Disney] didn’t tell us, ‘We’re done with you and this movie.’ We’re still writing the script.” she confided some time ago to People. Actor and producer Tyler Perry is also involved in the project and spoke about it in the columns ofEntertainment Tonight.

Touchstone Pictures

The latter admitted to being “a little annoyed” by the time it took for the project to get underway. “I’m a little annoyed at how long it took me. I’ve made four movies since we started talking about it. Disney is a huge, wonderful company, but I really want to make this movie and Whoopi Goldberg wants also really this movie“, he indicated.

Imminent filming for Sister Act 3?

Very recently, it was the actress and musician Tanya Trotter who gave positive news about the project. According to her, filming could begin soon. Tanya Trotter made an appearance in Sister Act, Act 2, as a member of the choir.

As ComingSoon reports, she confirmed that the script was ready. Recently, Whoopi Goldberg herself told Entertainment Weekly that the film could begin shooting soon, without further details.

“I can say it’s happening. It will come when it comes. It will happen soon. I can’t wait. It’s time for it to happen. Because we need to laugh!”

Sister Act 3 is therefore still on track. Will it be released in theaters or directly on Disney+? At the moment, no information has been released on this subject. Note that the first Sister Act was one of the most profitable comedies of the 90s, raking in the modest sum of $231 million at the worldwide box office for a budget of $31 million.

As for the second opus, it grossed around 124 million internationally, half as much as the first. In France, the two works have gathered 3.6 million fans. The license then continued on stage with a successful musical comedy featuring the memorable gospel hits from the film.
