Their works are presented together for the first time. Those of a renowned designer and in comparison, those of a sculptor and painter, no less well known. Couple in the city, the two artists Elizabeth and Gérard Garouste have each led very different paths, with singular universes, brought together in the major summer exhibition in Dinard this summer.

He is a painter and sculptor. She draws objects and creates furniture. The major summer exhibition in Dinard brings together for the first time the artist couple, Elizabeth and Gérard Garouste. An exhibition, where the visitor will be able to come across large canvases, masks, sculpture, decorative art, freedom and the strange.

Elizabeth thus rediscovers her portrait, a canvas painted in 2003 by her husband, Gérard: a woman whose body is a chair. “It’s a vision that I’m used to seeing in Gérard’s paintings, where very often the members are on different sides. Plus, I’m a bit “in furniture”, which corresponds to my work” notes the designer.

Further on, one of Gérard Garouste’s major pieces is exhibited, the “Dive bacbuc”, “a funny installation on the reading of Rabelais”one of the authors that the artist rediscovered with a philosopher:

“We worked together on Cervantes, on Rabelais and then obviously on the Talmud, which are extraordinary sources of inspiration. There is exegesis, but for a painter, it’s mind-blowing.”

We will find in them a certain strange beauty, which is on the border between the familiar and the poetic imagination.

Laura Goedert

Curator of the exhibition “Elizabeth and Gérard Garouste, art at the Source”

“They are in two completely different universes, explains Laura Goedert, Curator of the exhibition. A very erudite, very intellectualized side in Gérard, while in Elizabeth, we will find a kind of quite incredible spontaneity. And paradoxically, there is something that will link them, we will find in them, a certain strange beauty, which is on the border between the familiar and the poetic imagination, which works quite well.

An exhibition with a view of the Emerald Coast, in the Villa des Roches brunes, the two artists rediscover their creations in a new light. “A work, a painting, a sculpture, whether for Elizabeth or for me, when we are in a new place, it takes on a new dimension. And there, there is a real surprise, and that is very pleasant!” rejoices the artist.

This exhibition is also a tribute to La Source, an association created by the Garouste couple in the early 90s, to take children in difficulty on the paths of artistic creation.

The exhibition “Elizabeth and Gérard Garouste, art at the Source” at La Villa Les Roches Brunes until October 6 and at the Palais des Arts et des Festivals in Dinard until September 1.
