A project that turns into a fiasco. The Polish public service radio station Off Radio Krakow, based in Krakow, is the subject of controversy after the very surprising decision… to fire its journalists to replace them with artificial intelligencefollowing financial difficulties. Alex, Emila, and Jakub are the three new hosts of this station. Their voice, their show, their photo, their personality… Everything was generated by a computer, a sort of ChatGPT, to allow this radio to save money.
If in form, the resemblance to humans seems credible, on the other hand the substance is much more problematic… The station faces a wave of indignation after artificial intelligence generated false interviews… with deceased personalities . A program with the 1996 Nobel Prize winner for literature, who died in 2012, or with the writer Stanislaw Lem (who died in 2006) and Marshal Jozef Pilsudski (died in 1935). Here again, the remarks were completely invented. The public denounces these digital creations, pointing out a attack on authenticity and journalistic ethics.
Faced with the controversy, the radio management published a press release announcing the end of this experiment: “After a week, we received so many messages that we learned our lessons and concluded that its continuation would be nonsense” explained the manager, Mariusz Marcin Pulit.
