At the beginning of September 2024, La Presse de la Manche and its website actu.fr announced several projects on the gas network in the city center of Cherbourg-Octeville, delegated municipality of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin (Manche).

A trench had been opened on rue Christine. Patrice Martindeputy mayor for roads, had also announced a similar type of project on Rue Gambetta, near Place Henry-Gréville, with the implementation of alternative traffic.

Where a gas leak occurred on October 26

It is in this sector that a gas leak required the establishment of a security perimeter the Saturday October 26, 2024. “Microcracks” were reportedly detected in an “aging” gas pipe, the cause of this leak in Impasse Couppey, while the work was already in progress. Eleven firefighters, three engines from the Cherbourg barracks as well as two teams from GRDF and the national police were deployed to the scene.
