  • For American director Ava DuVernay, an election of Donald Trump would represent a danger for society.

  • In her documentary “The 13th”, she notably showed that a system of criminalization of the African-American population was put in place to fill the prisons.

  • Making new voices heard, changing the status quo: This is Ava DuVernay’s goal.

When Barack Obama was elected in 2008, she was in Sweden. Sixteen years later, it was in Geneva, spent the night in front of CNN, that she followed from her hotel room the duel between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump for the American presidency. After a career in journalism and communications, Ava DuVernay moved late to directing, creating a work deeply rooted in the social reality of her country. For Netflix, the native of Long Beach in California, now based in New York, notably signed the miniseries In their eyes (2019), about young African Americans convicted of a crime they did not commit, and The 13th (2016), a relentless documentary about mass incarceration and the privatization of the prison industry.

For the big screen, she has directed five feature films to date, including Selma (2014), a biopic of Martin Luther King focusing on his 1965 protest marches in Alabama. Guest of honor at the GIFF (Geneva International Film Festival), she says she is extremely anxious on the eve of the elections. “But I remain hopeful,” she smiles.
