With the rise of streaming VOD, French cinema is finding new platforms on which to offer its projects which interest neither broadcasters nor television channels.

Long live the Republic, long live

The French cultural exception defines the functioning of the country’s film industry, in which, roughly and among other measures, distributors must invest in local cinema to be authorized to broadcast. Thus, Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime and other streaming services available in France all meet the obligation to support the local industry by financing several films and series per year. These incentives now allow filmmakers to create works that might not have found funding from traditional television channels and distribution companies.

Among these works, action cinema, a relatively unpopular genre within mainstream French cinema, finds a new lease of life with the contribution of these platforms. We can remember, for example, the two films Lost Ball by Guillaume Pierret, broadcast by Netflix, or Kali by Julien Seri, distributed by Amazon Prime. It is also Amazon in question since Jeff Bezos’ platform can congratulate itself on the success of a new action film distributed by it: Tigers and Hyenas.

If the eyes come out AND…

Directed and co-written by Jérémie Guez, Tigers and Hyenas tells the story of Malik, a young man who discovers the arrest of his stepfather for having been a member of the “Fontainebleau Gang”. Helped by the lawyer of said father-in-law and his former robber partners, Malik will try to free his relative by preparing a dangerous heist. Available since November 22 on the American streaming service, the film managed to reach second place among the most viewed films on the platform in France. Carried by the performances of Waël Sersoub (Kanun, la loi you sang, BRI) Géraldine Nakache (Kaamelott, The Flame) and Sofiane Zermani (Enemy brothers, The Wages of Fear), the feature film seems to resonate with French audiences.

It must be said that French genre cinema as a whole has long been shunned by the usual production houses.judging these films insufficiently attractive to the public. Despite the success of certain productions (we can notably think of Vermines by Sébastien Vaniček), directors working in this corner of cinema often have to turn to the United States to find producers willing to finance their ambitions. All that remains is to hope that the pool of talent working in genre cinema has now found a place conducive to their expression.
