Forbes magazine has published its ranking of the most profitable celebrities since they died. And music stars are over-represented in this top. But this year, an actor enters the top 10.
This is an unusual classification to say the least. The very serious economic magazine Forbes published this week the ranking of the celebrities who bring in the most money. But the particularity of this ranking is quite simply that these stars have… died. It contains mostly big names in music who continue to generate millions of dollars, even decades after their death.
Matthew Perry enters the top 10
Except that this year, an actor entered this top 10 of a particular genre: Matthew Perry. The unforgettable Chandler Bing in the cult series Friends for an entire generation has reportedly generated $18 million since his death from an overdose on October 28, at age 54. A sum which is explained in particular by the sales of his memoirs, “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terribe Thing”.
On the third step of the podium, we find the writer Dr Seuss, who died on September 24, 1991, the father of the Grinch and the Cat in the Hat. His books and licenses for theme parks, television, and spin-off clothing grossed $75 million. Freddie Mercury is second: 250 million dollars following the sale in June of the catalog of the group Queen. Without forgetting the increase in revenue linked to the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.
As for the artist who reigns on this ranking, it is obviously Michael Jackson. Since his death on June 25, 2009, the King of Pop has generated a total of over $3.3 billion since his death in 2009.
