“Palm Royale”: The sixties and colorful trend for summer 2024

As summer approaches, we want a change of scenery and to fly to distant lands, much more exotic than ours, like Palm Springs, Acapulco or Capri. What if, at the same time, we changed eras? Where the art of living, straight out of a postcard, was perhaps more distinguished. We could stop in the 60s to see what was happening in terms of fashion. So, let’s let ourselves be inspired and surprised by the new series Palm Royale on Apple TV+ and its exquisite and joyfully colorful retro looks. The pitch? Palm Beach, late sixties, Maxine Simmons (Kristen Wiig) tries to find a place in high society. His first mission is to join the private Palm Royale club and thus make a name and a reputation. In a world made of appearances, every opportunity is good to take care of your presentation and above all to impress with your look. From a chic lunch to a tennis match, a poolside cocktail or a gala, it’s a parade of vintage silhouettes characteristic of the era’s golden age.

Printed caftans, checked trapeze dresses, skirt and suit sets, as well as sunglasses and all kinds of headwear are undoubtedly the stars of the series. After extensive research, costume designer Alix Friedberg was able to find looks from the period by Bill Blass, Valentino, Pucci and Arnold Scaasi, and use them to dress the characters. Only 40% of the outfits had to be created in the style of those years.

From the pool to the podiums

The craze for this nostalgic and refined trend is also seen on the season’s catwalks. The desire to relax on a deckchair by a swimming pool in good company is always a popular summer activity! Among the designers who follow the wave, there are always the leading figures, like Pucci, Etro or Missoni, who have kept a strong DNA anchored in this era. Emilio Pucci and his psychedelic prints inspired by Capri is the one who knew how to brilliantly dress the jet-set at a time when the body needed space.

Other names like Ulla Johnson or Giambattista Valli explore the toned-down glamorous look. The first uses certain details which anchor the look in the sixties such as the puffed sleeves or the crochet. The preferred combination is the crop top and the long printed skirt, all worn with flat sandals. The second offers more subtle silhouettes. Clean lines where the white is just highlighted with embroidery referring to the plant world.

How to adopt the trend?

Prints are the key element of this summer look. Whether they are abstract, plant-based or graphic, we want them on satin pieces with fluid volumes, like a caftan or wide-leg pants that can even be layered. But it’s the details that will make all the difference. Sunglasses are essential to go incognito, maxi jewelry for a sophisticated touch, handbags in natural materials because it’s chic and of course hats or scarves to protect yourself from the sun. Up to you.
