Cannes 2024: Sean Baker wins the Palme d’Or with “Anora”

Chaired by Greta Gerwig, the jury of the 77th Cannes Film Festival rewarded a comedy about a stripper. In the parallel sections, Switzerland leaves with several prizes.

“This film is full of humanity, it captivated us, allowed us to laugh, to hope beyond hope and broke our hearts.” It is with these words that Greta Gerwig presented the Palme d’Or to the film “Anora” by Sean BakerSaturday May 25, 2024. The film tells the fate of a young stripper from Brooklyn who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, before the latter’s family gets involved, trying at all costs to have it annulled. the wedding.

Two of our favorites of the festival appear in the prize list: Jacques Audiard’s daring musical comedy “Emilia Perez” won the jury prize, while the four actresses in the film, Karla Sofia Gascón, Zoe Saldana, Adriana Paz And Selena Gomez, were awarded the prize for female interpretation. The film takes place in the world of Mexican cartels and deals with transidentity. The super joyful feminist body horror of Coralie Fargeat “The Substance” received the screenplay prize. In this surprising and limitless gore film, a movie star in decline (Demi Moore) injects himself with a substance to regain his youth.

Concerning the rest of the prize list, the grand prize was awarded to “All We Imagine as Light” by Payal Kapadia, one of four directors in competition. A delicate friendship film about two nurses and roommates in Bombay. The directing prize was awarded to “Grand Tour”, by the Portuguese Miguel GomesAnd Jesse Plemons received the Best Actor Award for his performance in “Kinds of Kindness,” from Yorgos Lanthimos. “The seeds of the wild fig tree”, from Mohammad Rasoulof, received a special prize in support of his fight: sentenced to 8 years in prison, the director (Golden Bear in Berlin, for “The Devil Does Not Exist”) fled his country and arrived in Europe there just a few days away. Note also that the Golden Camera, which rewards the best first film in all categories, was awarded to “Armand”, by the Norwegian Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel. The film deals with an argument between two children at a school and the collateral damage that ensues on the adults.

On the Swiss side, “Las novias del sur”Elena Lopez Riera won the Queer Palm for short film. Indian actress Anasuya Sengupta was crowned best actress in the Un Certain Regard category for her sublime performance in “The Shameless”, a Swiss co-production. Finally, Kodithe griffon cross star of the feature film “The Trial of the Dog” by Laetitia Doschreceived the Palm Dog.
