The 24th edition of the National Film Festival (FNF) of Tangier was inaugurated on the evening of Friday October 18. The opening ceremony of this cinematographic event, which continues until October 26, was marked by tributes paid to actors Safia Ziani and Mohamed Choubi, in recognition of their remarkable careers.

During his speech, Abdelaziz El Boujdaini, Secretary General of the Communication Department at the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, and also acting director of the Moroccan Cinematographic Center (CCM), stressed that this new edition offered the opportunity to present the latest Moroccan film productions and to shine the spotlight on young talents in this sector, and also constitutes a space for dialogue on the state of Moroccan cinema and its prospects.

The festival also aims to strengthen the link between the public and cinema, he added, while emphasizing the importance of preserving and promoting Moroccan cinematographic heritage, which is distinguished by its plurality, its diversity. and its inclusiveness, transcending linguistic and geographical barriers.

For his part, Mounir Laymouri, mayor of Tangier, affirmed that this event is of capital importance to strengthen the position of Tangier as a cinematographic and cultural destination. “As part of our commitment to promoting culture, we aspire to make Tangier a cultural capital and a central axis of development in the years to come, through various cultural projects and international partnerships aimed at enriching the cultural offer.“, he added.

The opening ceremony also made it possible to present the members of the jury of the four competitions of this edition (fiction feature films, fiction short films and documentary feature documentaries and films from film schools and institutes ).

The jury for the fiction feature film competition is chaired by director and screenwriter Mohamed Mouftakir and includes Latifa Baqa (writer, teacher), Najlae Benmbarek (journalist, communications consultant), Mariam El Ajraoui (academic, researcher), Bachir Edkhil (writer, political scientist), Issa Serge Coello (director, screenwriter, producer, Chad) and Nabil Jai (artist, lyricist).

The jury for the fiction and documentary short film competition, chaired by director and screenwriter Khaoula Assebab Benomar, is made up of Souad Azaitraoui (journalist), Fousseyni Maïga (general director of the National Cinematography Center of Mali), Saïd El Mazouari (film critic) and Rachid Boutounes (director, producer).

The jury for the feature-length documentary competition, chaired by director and academic Jamila Annab, includes Houria Boutayeb (journalist) and Habib Nasry (academic, film critic). Finally, the jury for the film school and institute film competition is chaired by Latefa Ahrrare, director of ISADAC, and includes Sanae Ghouati (academic, art critic) and Azelarab Alaoui Mharzi (director, academic ).

In addition, 22 prizes will be awarded by the juries and distributed between the four competitions: 14 prizes for feature-length fiction films, 3 prizes for short fiction and documentary films, 3 prizes for feature-length documentaries, and 2 prizes for films from film schools and institutes.

Among the activities on the program for this 24th edition of the FNF are round tables on various themes, such as “Artificial intelligence and the future of cinema: the emergence of a key player”, “Industry financing cinematographic” or “Animated cinema in Morocco: the paths to recognition”.
