The work baptized Painting 162 X 130 cm, May 26, 1963 was in fact sold in public sale at Christie’s in Hong Kong on September 26, 2024 for around €4,222,000, announced the museum, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year.
For three years at the museum
“This painting, vertical composition, ample black passages with the brush, on an orange-red background, was deposited at the Soulages museum for three years. Since 2014, the museum has accepted works on deposit, the latter allowing us to enrich the tours and satisfy our visitors. May the collectors be thanked,” the museum also underlines.
A record of more than 20 million dollars
This is not a record for the Aveyron painter who died in 2022. The record was in 2021, at Sotheby’s, in New York (United States) for Painting, 195 x 130 cm August 4, 1961 : $20,141,700. Or approximately 17.8 million euros. Almost double its previous record.
In 2019, a canvas, Painting, 200 × 162 cm, March 14, 1960had in fact been awarded 9.6 million euros at Tajan in Paris. And the year before Painting 186 x 143 cm, December 23, 1959 left for barely less ($10.6 million or 9.2 million euros) in New York.
He also sold dozens of paintings worth more than a million eurosbut since his death, the Ruthenian painter’s popularity had no longer reached a peak such as that reached in Hong Kong in September 2024.
