Significant reforms are planned in the education sector in Senegal. They include the introduction of English and the generalization of national languages in elementary school. These measures are approved by education stakeholders, although they emphasize the need for certain preconditions, particularly with regard to teacher training.

English, widely used throughout the world, has become essential in many sectors such as IT and tourism. Senegal plans its teaching from elementary school, in particular in CM1 and CM2, from the next school year. This decision was confirmed during an interministerial meeting on September 19. The Prime Minister called for a clear roadmap for the introduction of English, ensuring equal access for students.

Education professionals recognize the relevance of this initiative, but insist on the importance of teacher training. Currently, only 4% of primary school teachers have a sufficient level of English. They suggest that the year 2024/2025 be dedicated to online training to reach a wider audience.

Khalifa Sarr, educational mediator, also highlights the need for continuing training for teachers, balance in school programs, and the publication of adapted textbooks following curriculum reform.

In addition to the introduction of English, the government wants to generalize the use of national languages in the education system. According to Moustapha Guirassy, this initiative would make it possible to better integrate these languages into the education of children, thus reflecting the cultural heritage of the country.

Khalifa Sarr believes that teaching in mother tongues from a young age would improve academic results by taking into account the socio-psychological realities of children. This approach is seen as a relevant response to the current challenges of the Senegalese education system.
