Justin Timberlake to plead guilty to drunken driving

The singer, arrested while drunk last June, will plead guilty in order to obtain a reduced sentence.

American pop superstar Justin Timberlake will plead guilty to drunken driving in order to get a reduced sentence, the Suffolk County prosecutor in New York state announced on Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office also said the singer would appear in person at the Sag Harbor court on Long Island on Friday. She did not specify what the sentence reduction consisted of, the New York Times reported.

The singer was arrested in June “intoxicated” – with “bloodshot eyes, his breath smelling of alcohol” – after failing to stop at a crossroads and failing to “keep” his vehicle on the “correct” path, according to police.

Not guilty first

Justin Timberlake had initially chosen to plead “not guilty” to the charges he was accused of. His lawyer even pleaded by accusing “the police of having made a number of very significant errors” during the arrest of the artist.

A former member of the boy band NSYNC in the late 1990s, the “prince of pop” embarked on a solo career as a singer, songwriter, producer and actor that propelled him to the rank of global icon.

Justin Timberlake has since won ten Grammy Awards and four Emmys, the Academy Awards of music and television. He was in the middle of a world tour for his new album when he hit the headlines last June.
