An “unspeakable act of extreme violence”. A municipal agent from the city of Grenoble died this Sunday, September 8, after being shot by the perpetrator of a road accident whom he was trying to prevent from fleeing. The person responsible for the accident and shooter is currently on the run. BFMTV.com summarizes what we know at this stage.
• A traffic accident near the town hall of Grenoble
At around 7:15 this Sunday morning, a traffic accident involving two light vehicles occurred on Boulevard Jean Pain in Grenoble, a city centre thoroughfare near the town hall.
The two cars involved were a Peugeot 2008 on the one hand, and “an Audi RS3 with a Polish registration plate” on the other, which hit the first one which was waiting at a red light, as indicated by the Grenoble public prosecutor Éric Vaillant.
According to initial information provided by the police, a passer-by then came to the aid of the injured motorists. A municipal agent from the “urban cleanliness service of the city (…) on duty in the public space” at that time, according to Mayor Éric Piolle, also in a vehicle, also intervened.
• The person who fired the shots is responsible for the accident
As the municipal officer approached the scene of the collision, he noticed that the driver of the Audi was trying to flee. He tried to stop him, but the man pulled out a gun and shot him twice.
“The person responsible for the accident fired two shots at a municipal employee who tried to prevent him from fleeing,” the magistrate summarises.
The driver of the Peugeot was injured and was prescribed six days of total incapacity for work. Her life is not in danger.
• Officer dies of injuries, suspect flees
Taken into care in a critical condition with his life in danger, the municipal agent succumbed to his injuries at the Grenoble hospital, as announced by the prosecutor early this afternoon.
The perpetrator, whose identity is not known at this stage, is on the run and “actively sought” by law enforcement. An investigation has been opened, entrusted to the Grenoble judicial police section.
• The city deplores an “unspeakable act”
In a press release, the city of Grenoble “condemns” “this unspeakable act of extreme violence”, ensuring that it is in contact with the authorities to provide “its assistance and support to the police and the justice system” so that the perpetrator is apprehended.
The municipality also announced the opening, on Monday, September 9, of “a psychological monitoring unit”. “Today, the entire public service is damaged”, the city deplores.
