Families still live in tents and others are housed in houses no larger than 70 meters – Tel Quel Arabic

The African Centre for Strategic Studies and Digitisation noted that “the housing process for those affected has witnessed several irregularities. More than 8 months after the earthquake, some families are still living in dilapidated houses or tents.”

The center added in its report on “Evaluating the Economic and Social Impacts of the Al Hoceima Earthquake”, a copy of which is available on TelQuel Arabi, that “only 1,000 homes have been rebuilt, which has halted the reconstruction process and deprived many people of receiving assistance for administrative reasons. Some people had their files rejected just because they did not receive the special number sent by phone, etc.”

He explained that “the residents were entrusted with the responsibility of demolishing the homes due to the difficulty of accessing demolition equipment to the affected areas, but no resources or means were provided to the residents to implement this process.”

The report explained that “the residents criticized the unfair compensation they received, as multiple families were housed in small houses not exceeding 70 meters, and the residents’ conditions regarding the architectural form and the materials that should be used for construction were not respected.”

The same speaker pointed out that “the methodology used to disburse aid to the population was not practical and required a long time, as many residents had to wait for long periods after the first payment was disbursed before the committee came to inspect what had been accomplished and the second payment was disbursed.”
