One of the buildings of the Pasteur Institute houses a strange nursery. In plastic bins, mosquito larvae slowly develop, destined to join their adult counterparts in a room with a tropical climate. They will not lack company: the Pasteur Institute now hosts 2,000 to 5,000 mosquitoes, with which researchers are studying the role played by these “vectors” in the transmission of infectious diseases, such as the Zika and Chikungunya viruses.
Within two to three years, the mosquito population at the Pasteur Institute will increase sixfold. The independent research institute has embarked on the construction of a new insectary, operational in 2028. It will be part of a future research center dedicated to the study of emerging pathogens.
