“George Washington, that suits me… Thomas Jefferson, that suits me…” Back in the freshly redecorated Oval Office, Donald Trump reviews the portraits of his illustrious predecessors which adorn the walls.

The 47th President of the United States, who was sworn in a few hours ago, is seated at the “Resolute Desk”, a massive dark wood office.

In front of him, piles of documents in leather pouches and a box of his favorite black markers. Next to him, an advisor who passes him decrees one by one to which he affixes his signature. In front of him, a small group of journalists.

The Republican engages in an impromptu press conference lasting around fifty minutes.

He alternates outrageous remarks against certain political adversaries, shattering diplomatic announcements and open boasting – like when the former reality host says he had “good reviews” for his inauguration speech.

The advisor continues to present the texts to him. “This one is important,” said the Republican, elected after a particularly virulent campaign against migrants, before signing a decree calling into question land rights, which he considers “ridiculous”. But which is guaranteed by the Constitution.

“What a great feeling!”

“What a great feeling!” says the 78-year-old billionaire, already president from 2017 to 2021, when the press wants to know what he feels when returning to the Oval Office, which was hastily redecorated by his teams during the day.

The deep blue carpet installed by Joe Biden has given way to a more neutral shade, flags have been added, and some portraits have changed.

Donald Trump turns towards a wall, points to a painting: “This one is good,” he says.

This is Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the United States, whom Donald Trump likes, but who is a figure widely criticized by progressives for his racist and populist positions. Former Democratic President Joe Biden didn’t want it.

Then Donald Trump shows the portraits of the first president, George Washington, and the third, Thomas Jefferson, figures that appear to be consensual. “Very prudent” choices, judges the 45th and now 47th president.

“Maybe we should all read it”

When a journalist asks him if, in accordance with custom, Joe Biden left him a letter, Donald Trump looks up from the text he has just signed – declaring a state of emergency on the border with Mexico – and says: “ Maybe. Wait a bit.”

He opens the desk drawer, says “Oh”, takes out an envelope with the number 47 written on it, which he shows to the cameras. This is indeed the message of his predecessor.

The former real estate developer, who has continued to publicly humiliate Joe Biden in recent years, jokes that without the reporter’s question, he would not have found the message for “months” or even “years.”

“Maybe we should all read it together,” he says. But he does not comply, the letter remains confidential.

Donald Trump is back, and his ability to capture, excite, and maintain media attention is intact.

After answering a question on the social network TikTok, and while others are asking, he scans the group of journalists in front of him.

“Was Biden doing press conferences like that?” he asks.

Knowing very well that the 82-year-old Democrat avoided this type of improvised exchange as much as possible, and thus caused great frustration among journalists.
