Doctors from the Inserm Sentinels network monitor the number of cases of “acute respiratory infections” ARI (sudden onset of fever or feeling of fever and respiratory signs). ARIs are caused by different respiratory viruses including SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19), influenza viruses and other respiratory viruses such as RSV, rhinovirus, or metapneumovirus. The aim of ARI surveillance is to monitor epidemics caused by these viruses.
Concerning clinical monitoring: In mainland France, last week (2025w01), the incidence rate of cases of acute respiratory infection (ARI) seen in general medicine consultations was estimated at 499 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI). [466 ; 532]). Subject to future consolidation of data, this rate is increasing compared to the previous week (consolidated data for 2024s52: 351 [341 ; 362]).
ARIs are caused by different respiratory viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19), influenza viruses, as well as other respiratory viruses (RSV, rhinovirus or metapneumovirus). The aim of ARI surveillance is to monitor epidemics caused by these viruses. You can find the national bulletin of the week, updated every Wednesday, on the Inserm Sentinels network website.
Flu :
- Last week (2025s01), subject to future consolidation of data, the incidence of cases of influenza seen in general practice among patients consulting for ARI was slightly decreasing compared to the previous week and was still at a high level of activity. The observed decrease will need to be confirmed in the coming weeks, particularly due to the start of the school year which could reactivate the transmission of influenza viruses.
The influenza viruses identified were mainly of type A(H1N1)pdm09
Covid-19 :
- Last week (2025s01), subject to future consolidation of data, the incidence of Covid-19 cases seen in general practice among patients consulting for ARI was stable compared to the previous week and was at a low level. activity level
This surveillance, carried out in collaboration with Public Health France, the National Reference Center for respiratory infections (Institut Pasteur and Hospices Civils de Lyon) and the University of Corsica, makes it possible to monitor the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic and epidemics. due to other respiratory viruses (flu, respiratory syncytial virus, rhinovirus and metapneumovirus in particular). It is based on the observation of patients with AKI seen by a general practitioner or a pediatrician.
