A temporary opportunity: the HPV vaccine offered free for 21-45 year olds

On October 16, the Ministry of Health and Social Services announced a temporary measure allowing the bivalent Cervarix vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV, types 16 and 18) to be offered free of charge to healthy adults aged 21 at 45 years old having never received this vaccine. Vaccination planning and logistics coordinator and CISSSO spokesperson Frédérique Morin gives some details;

In Outaouais, many time slots are available to administer this vaccine. This is an opportunity for those concerned, as this measure is conditional on stock availability.

HPV infections are the most common sexually transmitted infections. People aged 20 to 24 are particularly affected. The HPV vaccination program aims to prevent various serious injuries and illnesses caused by these viruses, including:

• Cancers of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus and throat;
• Genital warts, also caused by HPV.

HPV causes almost 100% of cervical cancers, between 60 and 90% of other genital cancers.

Although the benefits of vaccination are greatest when administered before the start of sexual activity, adults can also derive significant benefits. Frédérique Morin adds that only one dose will be administered;

Eligible people can receive the vaccination free of charge by making an appointment on the Clic Santé platform. Don’t wait to take advantage of this temporary measure which helps prevent serious illnesses linked to HPV.
