In 2022, cardiovascular diseases were the most frequent cause of death in Luxembourg. According to the death register of the Ministry of Health, a total of 1,104 people died from diseases of the circulatory system. This corresponds to 25.8% of all deaths in the country. This is what underlines a parliamentary question from DP deputies Mandy Minella and Gérard Schockmel. They address the need to set up a national register of diseases of this type in order to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of these diseases in Luxembourg.
Germany and France, where corresponding systems are already in place and would provide important information for public health, would serve as models for such a registry. According to Martine Deprez (CSV), Minister of Health and Social Security, the ministry is currently working on the creation of a suitable legal framework which will allow the establishment of such disease registers. A registry of this type for cancer diseases already exists. It makes it possible to collect comprehensive data on cancers, their treatment and their prognosis.
Furthermore, Minella and Schockmel wonder whether the data from these registers could also be made available to emergency services. MEPs propose giving emergency services access to relevant medical information so that they can act quickly and targeted in an emergency. However, the Ministry of Health emphasizes that the primary use of patient data in emergency care could be better ensured by an electronic patient records system. Disease registries would primarily serve secondary use, for example for health policy, and tertiary use in research and innovation.
