AWhile alcohol consumption increases the risk of seven types of cancer, including breast, colon and liver cancer, the US Surgeon General recommends placing warning labels on alcoholic beverages, reports THE New York Times. The objective would be to update the labels of bottles and other cans in the same way as those of tobacco packets.

Currently, bottle packaging, which has not been changed since 1988, already carries warnings about the risks of drinking alcohol during pregnancy or before driving. But nothing about cancer risks.

In his report, Dr Vivek Murthy nevertheless recalls that alcohol directly contributes to 100,000 cases of cancer and 20,000 deaths from cancer each year across the Atlantic.

The “third preventable cause of cancer in the United States”

“Alcohol consumption is the third preventable cause of cancer in the United States, after tobacco and obesity,” also specifies the American surgeon general. But the public health administrator of Joe Biden's government laments that “many people assume that as long as they drink at or below the limits of current recommendations […] there is no risk to their health or well-being.”
