Mayotte: Darrieussecq without news from 17% of hospital staff

“There are approximately 17% of hospital staff in Mayotte of whom we have no news”declared Geneviève Darrieussecq, the resigning Minister of Health, on Franceinfo on December 20, almost a week after the passage of Cyclone Chido which ravaged the archipelago.

At the level of the regional health agency (ARS), the figure rises to 40% of the workforce, which would represent “60 to 70 people”she explained.

But it can mean “isolated people, without the ability to recharge a phone or without telephony”specified the minister, who added that “gradually, contacts are made and established”.

170 caregivers expected

While around a hundred caregivers are already on site, others are expected to take over from those “exhausted and there from the start”informed the allergist. The figure of 170 health professionals sent to Mayotte, in total, is put forward by the minister.

In addition to the field hospital set up by civil security, which can accommodate emergencies, injured and sick people under surveillance, the ministry will deploy a modular resuscitation unit with eight places to relieve the hospital service.

109 heavy patients evacuated to

In addition, 109 heavy patients, including dialysis patients, were evacuated to Reunion Island, via a health bridge, the minister also indicated.

To date, the human toll remains unchanged, with 31 deaths identified in Mayotte, while the President of the Republic is still there after spending the night.

The WHO is also present on site to help set up health monitoring and prevent epidemics from spreading.
