Tahiti on December 4, 2024. The number of dengue cases is increasing in French Polynesia. The health monitoring agency is forced to increase its level of surveillance of the epidemic phase.

Last week, 47 new cases of dengue fever were reported to the health monitoring office for 112 samples taken. Among the cases, 25 people were sampled or reside in Tahiti, 5 in Moorea, 1 in Nuku-Hiva, 4 in Huahine, 2 in Rangiroa, 2 in Raiatea, 1 in Fakarava, 2 in Bora Bora, 1 in Tikehau, 1 in Maupiti, 1 in Arutua. These are the first cases on these last 2 islands.

An increasing trend is observed in the Windward Islands (IDV), the Leeward Islands (ISLV) and the Tuamotus (TG). The positivity rate also shows an upward trend for 1 month, of 42% in H47.

These indicators led the Alert Management Unit (CGA) to declare epidemic phase 3a (“epidemic phase requiring usual management measures” for the islands of Tahiti and Moorea.

Among a total of 268 samples serotyped since the start of the epidemic, serotype DENV-1 represents 73% of cases and DENV-2 only 27%.

Cases occur in isolation or in clusters (districts of Pointe Venus, Tuauru, Paofai and Taaone in particular), and mainly in children or young adults.

Furthermore, Santé Publique reports an increase in cases imported from Polynesia into the French territory.
