Notice to shellfish lovers.
The 300 gram box of frozen raw whole shrimp of the brand Monoprix Bio has been recalled since Tuesday due to the presence of the Vibrio vulnificus bacteria.
The batch concerned is 68000896, GTIN 3350033455283 and minimum durability date of June 1, 2026, informs the government site Rappel Conso.
This product has been sold from August 27 to November 25 in Monoprix stores throughout France.
Contamination par simple manipulation
A control of the shrimp revealed the presence of Vibrio vulnificusa bacteria which can cause gastrointestinal symptoms or even septicemia in vulnerable people in the most serious cases.
This bacteria develops particularly in salty, polluted and warm water, parasitizing in particular seafood. A human can be contaminated by ingesting the impacted product and even by simple handling.
“Vibrio vulnificus can enter through wounds”Olivier Bouchaud, who heads the infectious and tropical diseases department at the Avicenne Hospital in Bobigny, explained to Actu.fr in January.
“They are not necessarily big wounds, they could be scratches, for example. So she will seep under the skin and into the muscles. (…) The bacteria will destroy the tissues in which it is installed. (…) There can be real holes in the flesh.”
Vibrio vulnificus infection is mostly benign but can be treated with antibiotics in cases of septicemia. If the skin is necrotic, surgery may be necessary.
