Tunisia facing antibiotic resistance: raising awareness to protect the future

Tunisia participated, like other countries in the world, in the celebration of the global awareness week “for the proper use of antimicrobials” which is held every year from November 18 to 24, with a view to raising awareness among citizens the need to rationalize the consumption of antibiotics, taking into account their impact on health.

The Ministry of Health indicated, in a statement released on Sunday, that antibiotics, which have saved the lives of thousands of people, have become one of the greatest threats to human beings due to their excessive use which compromises the capacities to treat infections and leads to antibiotic resistance.

He stressed the importance of consulting in the event of illness and respecting the dosage prescribed by the attending physician.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has indicated that the global antibiotic resistance awareness week, placed this year under the theme “Educate, promote, act now” aims to address this health threat, to ensure the proper use of antimicrobials and reduce the emergence, development and transmission of drug resistance.

According to the WHO, antibiotic resistance is one of the most serious threats to global health, affecting both humans and animals.
