« JI would never have agreed to have an operation… Despite the size of my fibroid and the terrible pain, I couldn’t bear the idea that someone could remove my uterus and ovaries. I didn’t have children; I needed, mentally, to maintain this possibility,” confides Laurence, one of the first six patients treated by radiofrequency at the University Hospital, on November 6. Since then, the young forty-year-old from Pas-de- has not had the slightest pain linked to the procedure, she notes with real relief.

Uterine fibroids – benign tumors, common in women – can be accompanied by symptoms (bleeding, pain, pelvic heaviness, etc.) with significant repercussions for patients. “They also have an impact on fertility,” points out Aurore Deseure, gynecological surgeon at Lille University Hospital, carrier of this technological innovation within the Lille hospital. In the event of a large fibroid, a hysterectomy may be proposed, that is to say the total removal of the uterus.
