Why shouldn’t you sit on the toilet for too long? This is a very serious question answered by Dr. Lai Xue, colorectal surgeon at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas (United States) on CNN.
According to him, remaining on the toilet bowl can cause several complications and beyond 10 minutes, the health risks increase significantly.
A responsible: gravity
According to the doctor, prolonged sitting on a toilet bowl, combined with the oval shape of the seat, compresses the buttocks and keeps the rectum in a low position. This particular configuration disrupts blood circulation in the anal area, favoring the development of hemorrhoids.
Furthermore, prolonged sitting on the toilet can also lead to weakening of the pelvic muscles and even an increased risk of rectal prolapse (when the rectum, part of the large intestine, slides down and out of the anus).
What if you are constipated?
And if your prolonged sitting in the toilet is because you can’t relieve yourself, Xue still recommends stopping after 10 minutes. He further advises:
- Walk a little if necessary to stimulate transit
- Maintain good hydration
- Consume enough fiber.
