What if, like menopause, practicing physical activity was beneficial for women’s health during pregnancy? This is the subject of another study by the Poitevin Move laboratory, still within the framework of the “Women in motion” research program, in conjunction with the Regional Health Agency and the Perinat Nouvelle-Aquitaine Network (RPNA).

Reduce long-term diabetes risks

The research unit solicits women who are less than four months pregnant or postpartum (the period following childbirth). These volunteers can be prescribed physical activity sessions supervised by professionals by doctors or midwives. “They benefit from individualized support to carry out low or moderate intensity exercises”specifies Carina Enea, lecturer, who is working on this project with Mélanie Gréau-Marias, doctoral student.

And the effects seem positive according to the first feedback. “Physical activity helps reduce the development of pathologies such as gestational diabetes or gestational hypertension by 40%. It also reduces the risk of premature birth and cesarean section.develops the researcher. Especially since gestational diseases “can impact the long-term health of the mother and baby”insists Mélanie Gréau-Marias. “There is a nine times greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the years following childbirth, when you have had gestational diabetes. »

Other volunteers living around and Châtellerault are being sought for this study; a study which is part of more global work on the benefit of prescribing physical activity by midwives.
