What is this type 1 diabetes awareness day about?

Thanks to the support of the municipality and associations of Espelette, we are organizing two hikes supervised by Aldaxka. Gauargi provides us with his catering equipment and there will be music with Ezpeletako Herrian Kantuz, the group Folkablok, from Larressore, and Haurrock. As for entertainment, you can find inflatable games, wooden games, makeup and tattoo workshops. The profits will be paid in part to the AJD association, Aid to Young Diabetics, and the other part will allow us to continue to organize awareness meetings and outings for the children of Goxokiak.

When was the Goxokiak association created?

In 2010, by diabéto pediatrician Mireille Carré, who continues to support us, and parents. We have around forty members, including 15 families of children with type 1 diabetes. Our goal is to bring them together to create support networks. We also raise awareness because drawing attention to the first signs helps to avoid arriving at the emergency room in critical condition.

What is type 1 diabetes?

It is an autoimmune disease. The body’s defenses make a mistake and attack the body’s cells which produce insulin, this is vital, without this, sugars cannot be transported. This energy will be taken from fats, it creates acetone which is a poison for the body and this is where it can lead to a coma. Nine years ago, at 4 and a half years old, my son Jokin developed type 1 diabetes. There was no family history, we didn’t know the symptoms. We tend to feel guilty, but that has nothing to do with us. There have been quite a few developments in terms of support and hardware. Sport is recommended. Diabetes means living normally with every minute calculation and a suitable diet.
