Beware of this (unknown) danger that awaits cats in summer

While summer finally seems to be here, and temperatures are soaring, humans are not the only ones rejoicing at the return of the sun! Cats, known for their love of heat, will also delight in the first rays of the sun. However, be careful! A danger, very little known and yet very common among felines, threatens their well-being during this season: here is what it is and how to protect them.

Cats: this danger of summer

If your cat is attracted to good weather and heatthat he is always the first to bask in the slightest ray of sunshineknow that it is possible that he is exposed until catch a sunburn and this, despite his hair! Indeed, unlike humans, cats do not need light to synthesize vitamin D, which is provided to them by their diet (provided that it is complete and balanced).

Areas particularly sensitive to sunburn are: hairless places, or with short, sparse hair (breeds like Sphynxes are particularly at risk), zones roses (face and ears) and the light skin. We observe in a cat which has just suffered a sunburn a red and painful area.

Cats: how to protect them from the sun

So, for cats who like to do long naps even under the hottest sun, they should be encouraged to go rest in the shade a few hours, particularly during the hours the hottest of the day (generally between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.). It is also possible to put a little sunscreenspecifically designed for animals, on the most sensitive places, such as the ears.

With a repeated sun exposureyour cat is at risk of developing actinic keratosis, or inflammation of the skin due to the sun. This inflammatory summer favors the appearance of cancer of the ears and nose in older age, which presents in the form of gradually spreading crusts and sores. You may have already noticed it, like when a little feline has its ears “nibbled”. If you notice lesions, whatever they are, don’t hesitate to go consult your veterinarian.

Cats: the right actions to ensure their well-being in summer

During the summer, sunburns are not the only dangers which threaten your furry companions. Here are some tips for ensure their well-being during this period :

  • Hydration: make sure your cat always has access to fresh water. Change the water several times a day. Fountains may encourage cats to drink more often, as many prefer running water.
  • Cooling: create shaded spaces so your cat can rest away from the sun. Keep certain rooms in the house cooler by closing shutters or curtains during the hottest hours. This will be beneficial for you too!
  • Physical activity : don’t let your cat play outside during the hottest hours of the day. Favor going out early in the morning or late in the evening. Offer him indoor toys and activities to keep him active without having to endure the heat outside.
  • Nutrition : felines can lose their appetite in hot weather. Offer them light and frequent meals, especially with moist foods to help them maintain hydration.
  • Surveillance : Be alert for signs of heatstroke, such as excessive panting, lethargy, excessive salivation, or vomiting. If suspected, contact your veterinarian immediately.
