National HIV and STI screening campaign in Luxembourg for European Screening Week 2024

From November 18 to 22, 2024, Luxembourg is actively participating in European Testing Week, an initiative launched at European level since 2013. This campaign aims to encourage early detection of HIV as well as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in response to an increase in Europe and Luxembourg. Indeed, recent data from the national epidemiological report show a worrying increase in STI cases in Luxembourg.

In 2023, gonococcal infections (gonorrhea) increased by 27.6%, cases of syphilis by 16% and those of chlamydia by 6.8%.

This year, the HIV Berodung service of the Luxembourg Red Cross, the National Infectious Diseases Service (Luxembourg Hospital Center, CHL), Abrigado and the Ministry of Health and Social Security are joining forces to raise public awareness and promote early detection. Ketterthill and Bionext laboratories are joining the initiative by offering free and anonymous screening tests.

The Ministry of Health and Social Security calls for strengthened collaboration with all its partners to expand access to screening, raise awareness of the risks of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV, and guarantee personalized monitoring as well as access to treatments. This inclusive approach aims to encourage everyone to adopt preventive behaviors and get tested regularly, thus helping to reduce infections and improve public health for all.
