The health monitoring bulletin is drawn up every week by the Health Monitoring and Observation Office (BVSO).

For week 24, from June 10 to 16, 2024, a case of whooping cough was reported. This is a 15 year old person who is not up to date with her vaccinations, she did not get the booster at 6 and 11 years old. The BVSO specifies that the members of the entourage who were in contact with her have been identified. Prophylactic measures, namely antibiotics and booster vaccinations, were recommended to them.

The BVSO recommends vigilance and requests that any suspected case be reported, given the epidemic situation of whooping cough in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Whooping cough is also on the rise in France. Already in April, our colleagues from France Info revealed that around fifteen clusters have been recorded since the start of the year. Another more recent article, released at the beginning of June, reveals an explosion of whooping cough cases in mainland France. “Unheard of in 40 years” according to Sylvain Brisse, a researcher at the Pasteur Institute.

Know that whooping cough is a respiratory infection, caused mainly by the bacteria bordetella pertussis. This disease is very contagious because according to the Pasteur Institute, a infected person transmits the disease to fifteen other people on average.

The symptom that should alert you is a persistent cough for more than seven days without fever. Din the majority of cases, with fits associated with difficult inspiratory recovery, and sometimes vomiting occurring after the fits. If in doubt, do not hesitate to consult your doctor. Confirmation is done by PCR during the first three weeks of cough.
