The word scabies is scary, but the symptoms remain mild. The disease manifests itself by itching. It had already been declared last year in the establishment. Residents and medical staff suffered lesions after scratching. “We immediately called a dermatologist who was able to examine our agents and who diagnosed two cases among the residents and two among the agents, says Auffrey Maxime, deputy director in the EHPAD. It’s an epidemic that can be caught anywhere outside. We know that there are vectors between residents, hospitals, our agents, their entourage, families.”

To put an end to the epidemic, the EHPAD called on Doctor Corinne Capponi-Guillon, medical officer of health, because scabies is very contagious. :

People have a very bad idea. They immediately think we have scabies because we didn’t wash. Scabies is caught in elderly care establishments, in long stays and medium stays, and is transmitted mainly through the nursing care that residents require.

The disease can be difficult to detect, particularly in older people. “With these elderly people, the disease does not present itself as a classic gall, it has different locations: roots of the limbs, the back, the trunk. With caregivers, it is the same, that is to say the neckline, arms, because it is linked to nursing care. We even talk about the form of scabies in clean people. specifies the professional.

As a precaution, the fifty-five caregivers and residents showing symptoms were treated. Families were able to visit their loved one with a few adjustments: “There are no contraindications. If you have any contact, a hug or anything, you first equip yourself with a gown. Otherwise, there are no restrictions”, indicates a staff member to a visitor before entering the establishment.

The caregivers and residents concerned started taking their treatment today, in the nursing home, which will soon be free of the epidemic.
