A new multi-professional health center in Chennevières-sur-: when osteopaths attract doctors to the city

Four general practitioners, including an emergency doctor, and a gynecologist, came to settle in Chennevières-sur-Marne, as well as a nurse, a psychomotor therapist, a podiatrist, thanks to the multi-professional health center project led by osteopaths, including Xuan Maxel, now president of this MPS. Based in Chennevières, the latter was looking to work in a network. From 2018, a common house project was born around three osteopaths, a psychologist and several doctors. Covid and other hazards will delay the initiative. Between the start of the project and its completion, the team is renewed at 90%. Only osteopaths and the psychologist remain from the initial core, but new doctors will join them.

With the financial support of the Regional Health Agency (ARS) and the Ile-de- Regional Council, which each provide 250,000 euros, as for each multi-professional health center project, aid to installation of doctors from Health Insurance and the ARS, as well as aid from the intercommunality and support from the towns of Chennevières, which also facilitated negotiation with the lessors, Noiseau, La Queue-en-Brie, Ormesson and Villecresnes, technical assistance from URPS and the Hippocrate Développement firm, the project succeeded in seeing it through to the end. The new MPS was inaugurated this Thursday, October 17.

A multi-professional health center, and not a medical office which would bring together several liberals, insists Xuan Maxel. “The difference is that communication between caregivers is not only informal, we have at least two meetings per month, or even more if necessary,” explains the president of the MPS.

Handling small emergencies

While emergencies are regularly overcrowded, the MPS is linked to the 15, as part of the SAS system which organizes cooperation between hospital emergencies and community medicine. “In our sector (Chennevières, Ormesson, La Queue-en-Brie and part of Noiseau), 20% of visits to the emergency room are not followed by hospitalization and could be avoided“, indicates Xuan Maxel (at the microphone in the photo below). “The presence of an emergency doctor also allows us to treat patients who need ambulatory care, without requiring all the resources of the emergency room. This is the case, for example, of diabetics with hyperglycemia, who can be infused here.”

Next step for the Canavere health center, the creation of a CPTS (Territorial Professional Health Community). In Val-de-Marne, the first CPTS have, for example, set up unique call numbers to get an appointment with a doctor very quickly in the event of a minor emergency. “But, for now, we first want to consolidate the House. We are still looking for two physiotherapists before launching other projects,” indicates its president.

Tobacco-free month: Together, let’s meet the challenge for public health

Every year, the month of November marks an unmissable event for public health: the Tobacco free month. This national campaign, driven by the Ministry of Health and Public Health France, aims to encourage smokers to stop smoking for 30 days. A decisive period, because abstaining from smoking for a month increases the chances of quitting permanently by five. With nearly 75,000 deaths attributable to tobacco each year in France, smoking remains the leading cause of preventable mortality. In the Val-de-Marne department, 23.6% of residents over 15 years old declare themselves to be regular smokers. Beyond its human cost, tobacco also represents a significant economic burden, with costs linked to care, work stoppages and associated chronic diseases.

Faced with these findings, it is essential to strengthen prevention and support actions to reduce the prevalence of smoking, particularly among young people and vulnerable populations. Aware of this issue, the CPAM of Val-de-Marne is taking concrete action through several initiatives. Each year, calls for projects are launched to support local prevention actions, particularly around addictions. In 2023, these calls made it possible to finance 6 projects, including several support programs for young people, a population particularly sensitive to risky behavior. Interventions were carried out in the department’s middle and high schools by our health educators to raise awareness of the dangers of tobacco, but also of other addictions.

Tobacco-free month: initiatives in Val-de-Marne

While tobacco is responsible for 75,000 deaths each year in France, including 46,000 from cancer, a quarter of the adult population smokes daily. And yet, the majority want to stop, underlines the National Committee against Smoking. The whole point of No Tobacco Month is to invite smokers to take up the challenge. Because “1 month without smoking is 5 times more likely to quit,” recalls the slogan of this demonstration. In this context, prevention initiatives will be held in Villiers (market awareness operation on November 21 in the presence of health educators from the Cpam), in Vincennes on November 20 (permanence of the League against cancer in the heart of the city from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.). A national website also offers to register to participate in No Tobacco Month, which already has nearly 130,000 volunteers. See the site

Also note the organization of the 3rd edition of the Verticale de Mondor, a race against the clock individually or in relays of 2 members per team (for professionals from the hospital group), which will be held on Friday November 29.

Vaccination of infants has been compulsory since 2018 and that of pregnant women is recommended.

CHIC is experimenting with gene therapy for AMD

The ophthalmology team at the Intercommunal Hospital Center of Créteil (CHIC), led by Professor Eric Souied, included the first patient in the European Union suffering from exudative AMD in a phase 3 gene therapy protocol. This therapy could allow patients to produce their own treatment after a single surgical procedure, replacing the regular anti-VEGF injections currently required. If the results are conclusive, this treatment could transform exudative AMD from a chronic disease into a potentially curable condition.
