In Nîmes, diabetic children rediscover the pleasure of baking with Anissa Sadaoui

In the diocesan house of Nîmes this Wednesday, November 13, children put on their aprons to create sugar-free pastries. For World Diabetes Day, the Nîmes University Hospital and the association Diabuddies organized a day for young people affected by this autoimmune disease. “Teach them that they can have fun without feeling guilty”, explains Anissa Sadaoui, who creates pastries with a low glycemic index. For a snack, the pastry chef offers raspberry cupcakes with vanilla whipped cream. With her hands in flour, Liséa, 13, has always loved cooking. “It was a passion, long before the discovery of my diabetes. Now I enjoy baking for my family with less sugar.”explains the teenager, who came from Alès with her parents.

An association to support families

Nelly Lefrançois created Les Diabbudies, an association which supports families of diabetic children. “Our goal is to bring together and share through meetings and mutual aid.” Siloé’s mother, affected by this illness, could not sit idly by hearing the news of her daughter’s diagnosis. “It was 2018, Siloé was 10 years old. Initially, doctors thought it was a urinary infection, but she quickly fell into a coma.” Nelly says. The family’s life falls into the unknown. “We had to mourn our past life. Relearn everything. Managing meals, outings…”. To not be left alone with so many questions, Nelly decides to launch her association.

Today, around twenty families are part of it and organize “diab cafés” several times a month to get together and discuss their daily lives.
