November is here, and in keeping with the flow of “Movember,” it’s an opportunity to talk about the mental and sexual health of people with penises! Today we will talk specifically about the health of this appendix. On the menu, not the aperitif, but La Peyronie! Less fun, I admit. This inflammatory disease of the penis affects approximately 9% of the population, and appears mainly between the ages of 40 and 60, initially generally leading to erection pain, then over time a more or less intense curvature of the penis. Basically, you can go from a penis that becomes “special G or P spot” (let’s look on the bright side) to a curvature so radical that it becomes impossible to penetrate (much less fun).

This curvature is caused by one or more patches of scar tissue which generally form on the “back” of the penis (so “the top” when standing) and which can often be felt/identified when resting. The origin of the disease remains unclear, but certain genetic predispositions as well as practices or positions that can lead to microlesions are suspected.

Necessary medical care

If in certain cases of young people, spontaneous remissions exist, medical treatment is usually necessary to treat the symptoms and/or limit their progression (in particular by medication, by injections, or by operation in the most severe cases). . Note that other approaches to scar treatment can also be effective in “softening” plaques and limiting their impact.

If the disease is most of the time benign and painless (at least once the inflammatory outbreak(s) have passed), it can nevertheless lead to depression, because it affects one’s self-image, and this is all the more the case when it affects the quality of sexual life. So, if you experience repeated pain in the bandage or if a curvature appears, don’t wait too long before talking to your doctor!
