NÎMES The University Hospital is mobilizing for World Diabetes Day 2024

Since 1991, World Diabetes Day has been organized every November 14, the anniversary of the discovery of insulin by doctors Frederick Banting and Charles Best.

In , around 6.5% of the population is diabetic, or 4 million people. In , 49,000 people are affected, including around 10,000 treated with insulin. Thanks to the mobilization of professionals from the Nîmes University Hospital and patient associations, this event raises awareness and informs as many people as possible and offers a valuable opportunity for exchanges between patients, caregivers and users. This year, three major events are proposed:

Thursday, November 14, a stand of the Metabolic and Endocrine Diseases (MME) department of the Nîmes University Hospital. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Carémeau site – Central hall

Under the leadership of Dr. Ingrid Julier, endocrinologist, and the French Association of Diabetics of Gard (AFD30), represented by Rosine Portero, the professionals will hold an information and awareness stand in the central hall of Carémeau and will respond to questions questions from patients, users and hospital professionals on this chronic disease. “As head of the Metabolic and Endocrine Diseases department at Nîmes University Hospital for a year now, it seemed important to me to continue the dynamic of the partnership and to make visible a disease with significant impacts. These events aim to promote prevention and health education. Furthermore, this year, we will discuss pumps which make it possible to automate insulin injections (semi-closed loop) and, above all, we will emphasize the prevention of complications in the feet of diabetic people, before discussing the quality of life at work and physical activity, a subject that is particularly close to my heart”declares Dr. Ingrid Julier.

Wednesday November 13: Pediatric diabetes From 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Diocesan House of Nîmes

This year, Dr Randa Salet, pediatrician at Nîmes University Hospital, and her entire team, in collaboration with the Association for the Promotion of Therapeutic Education and Pediatric Research in Nîmes, are organizing World Diabetes Day at the Diocesan House of Nîmes on the theme “Sport and art with diabetes”. Through a rich and varied program which offers, among other things, conferences, stands, introduction to Aikido, or even a workshop for children with Anissa Pâtisserie, the public will be widely made aware and informed on this theme.

Saturday November 16: Diabetic Forum From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Departmental Archives of Gard (Free entry)
