Food poisoning becomes very common during the summer despite the reduced need for food in the human body due to rising temperatures, said nutritionist Leila Alouane.

In a statement to TAP, the nutrition expert continued that “mold and bacteria proliferate in food after it is removed from the refrigerator”, explaining that “when milk and its derivatives, fish, meat and other foods are preserved for a long time in a bassinet or plastic bag at a high temperature, this causes bacteria and microbes to wake up and multiply after being frozen.”

“Cases of mold are particularly common in certain types of products such as ice cream and fruit juices when the cold chain is broken,” she explained, referring to certain traders who choose to turn off their refrigerators at night to reduce their electricity consumption.

This behavior is likely to cause food products stored in refrigerators to rot due to the proliferation of microbes, she said, emphasizing the need to use insulated bags or boxes when purchasing food products for maintain food temperatures.

The nutritionist also warned against purchasing food products sold on street stalls, emphasizing the need to only obtain refrigerated products in stores that respect safety and hygiene standards.

Leila Alouane also recommended consuming meals with a high water content and a lower proportion of energy during the summer season, recommending increasing the consumption of fresh vegetables, especially salads, and being satisfied with just one type of fruit at each meal, because dietary diversification can have a negative effect on blood fat levels.

She also advised avoiding fried foods that stay in the stomach for a long time and favoring steamed foods, while consuming a sufficient amount of water to avoid dehydration.
