The number of cases of malaria and anemia has increased considerably in the Vulambo health area, located in the Vuhovi health zone, in the territory of Beni, (North Kivu).

According to Kasereka Mitavo, the nurse in charge of this health area, this increase is linked to the proliferation of poorly maintained fish ponds in the region over the past two years. This is conducive to the multiplication of mosquitoes, vectors of malaria.

According to him, at least 438 cases were reported between September and October 2024.

“There are several hypotheses that we are in the process of pinpointing. We have seen that there are several fish ponds in our region which are poorly maintained. We have noticed that there is an increase in malaria cases day by day. We say the situation is critical. We are even experiencing shortages of pharmaceutical products that can help us take good care of patients”indicated Kasereka Mitavo.

He calls on those responsible for these ponds to improve their maintenance and pleads for a campaign to distribute mosquito nets impregnated with insecticides in the area.
