The “No Tobacco Month” was launched in 2016 at the initiative of Public Health France and the Ministry of Health. Last year, 157,576 smokers registered on the website Tobacco free month. And since its creation, nearly 1.2 million people participated in this collective challenge, which notably offers a consultation with a tobacco specialist, a cessation aid kit and support from different stakeholders (health professionals, local businesses, relatives, etc.). In Quimper, for example, you can find stop kits available at the reception of the Town Hall, in the annexed town halls, but also in all the town halls of Quimper Bretagne Ouest.
Sharp drop in the number of smokers in Brittany in ten years
According to the latest Public Health France barometer, which dates from July 2023, there are 600,000 daily smokers in Brittanyas many men as women. This represents a little more than a quarter of Bretons aged 18 to 75. Ten years ago, the number of smokers in the region was higher, at almost 33%. Smoking has therefore decreased significantly, particularly among 18/30 year olds and 46-60 year olds. But since the Covid epidemic, we have recorded a stabilization.
Brittany is the region of France where people vape the most: 8.5% of Bretons use an electronic cigarette every daymainly young people and 31-45 year olds. Finally, like almost everywhere in France, the majority of Breton smokers are men under 60 with low income and few qualifications. “We must therefore strengthen actions to combat smoking for disadvantaged populations” estimates Public Health France.
