“Can depression make you ‘lose your mind’?”

Every month in your Pleine Vie magazine, Doctor Brigitte Blond answers readers’ questions. Here, she answers a question asked by Pierre P., from Hendaye (Pyrénées-Atlantiques).

In addition to your sad mood, your “desire for nothing”, you have the impression of forgetting everything, of no longer knowing how to organize yourself, of being unable to concentrate… Possible sleeping troubles add to the confusion. Don’t worry, nothing to do here with Alzheimer’s disease, for example, where we permanently forget the information, then impossible to retrieve, even with a recall clue (like the beginning of the searched word).

Temporary depression and memory loss: you shouldn’t worry

The good news is that, once the depressive episode is over and the brain is free of ruminations and dark thoughts, we pay full attention to the events of our life: memory functions again, at least as before.

Any advice or clarification? Write to me! Since your mail is abundant, it is impossible to respond to everyone, especially since each case is particular and complex, which sometimes requires me to seek the advice of a specialist. Consulting your family doctor is an irreplaceable first step.
