Every year, 157,229 Belgian hospitalized patients contract at least one healthcare-related infection. The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control highlights “the urgent need” for additional actions to counter these infections.

HASith 7% of its patients having contracted at least one healthcare-related infection per year during their stay in hospital (around one in fifteen), Belgium slightly surpasses the European average, located at 6.5%. This is what a study carried out in 31 countries and more than 1,300 European hospitals by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in 2022-2023 highlights.

Respiratory infections in number

Among healthcare-associated infections in Europe, around a third are respiratory, with pneumonia leading the way. In its communication, the ECDC specifies that covid-19 has significantly impacted the increase in infections. Other adverse events of this type include urinary tract infections, surgical site infections, bloodstream infections and gastrointestinal infections.
