Despite the drop in temperatures and the start of the autumn season, we can still see them. Tiger mosquitoes still prowl in Haute-Garonne, and particularly in Toulouse. Wants it as proof a new mosquito control operation organized on the night of Sunday September 29 to Monday September 30, 2024, on Ramier Island.

77 mosquito control operations

This is the 77th mosquito control operation orchestrated in the department this year, confirms the Regional Health Agency (ARS) , contacted by Toulouse News. And it seems that the most hated insect of summer particularly appreciates the Pink City, since half of these operations took place in Toulouse.

Last week, a new case of dengue was detected in a person living in the regional capital who was returning from a trip. This is the 62 cases of dengue fever in Haute-Garonne since May 1, 2024, the date of the start of the monitoring season.

The planned protocol

As soon as a case of viral disease (including dengue, zika and chikungunya) transmitted by a tiger mosquito is reported, the protocol is always the same. After the alert, comes the time for the investigation, then the insecticide treatment.

The company Altopictusis responsible by the ARS for all vector control operations – particularly curative – in Occitania, against the pest. Mosquito control is carried out between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. The insecticide is sprayed by pick-up truck on public roads, or sometimes on foot from the street.

Last summer, Jean-Sébastien Dehecqsanitary engineer at ARS Occitanie, explained to Toulouse News why there are more areas treated than imported cases: “we treat the main areas where the infected person has remained outside for a certain time, mainly places of home, work, and leisure”.

More cases, but less mosquito control

The ARS Occitanie certifies this, in comparison with last year, over the same periods (from May 1 to October 1), there are more cases of imported dengue feverwith 46 cases recorded in 2023.

On the other hand, mosquito control operations were fewer This year. In 2023, 90 treatments were carried out, compared to 77 this year.

Compared to 2023, the number of imported dengue cases increased by 35%, but the number of mosquito control operations carried out decreased by 14%.

When will the tiger mosquito end this year?

When could the tiger mosquito finally leave the Pink City? “Depending on the weather, there may be activity until mid-November,” indicated Renaud Chevaliertechnical manager at Altopictus in Haute-Garonne.
