Find sleep and sleep better? On TikTok, Generation Z competes with lame ideas

SLEEP – Sleep with a patch on your mouth, a mask on your eyes or drink a magnesium-based cocktail. Here are some tips developed by the new TikTok trend of « sleepmaxxing »which could be translated as « sleep a max » or « maximize your sleep » in French. Except that to find sleep, all these tips are not good to take, on the contrary, as you can see in our video at the top of the article.

The idea of this trend is to multiply accessories, creams, drinks (anti-pimple patches, subdued lighting, LED mask, essential oils, etc.) so that each night is a rebirth of the body.

Some ideas are not bad, such as the mask over the eyes, which according to a British study carried out by researchers at the University of Oxford in 2023 would improve alertness and memory during the day.

Tricks that cause insomnia

On the other hand, the mocktail « sleepy girl » made from magnesium and cherry juice is not recommended by some health experts. In the Daily Mail, a nutritionist assures that magnesium has a laxative effect, and that the drink in question is quite sweet, not enough to compete with counting sheep.

Another very bad idea: the patch on the mouth, or the « mouth taping » which, according to TikTok, would allow you to snore less, strengthen your jaw and reduce breath problems. But you may choke on the patch and wake up with a panic attack. Or worse, it can actually cause a drop in oxygen in your blood and increase cardiovascular risks.

One in two teenagers sleep less than seven hours

Lots of risks and few benefits, therefore in this trend, and yet Generation Z could really use real advice on how to get to sleep.

According to several studies around the world, young people sleep too little. In , according to a study financed by the Vinci Autoroutes Foundation and the National Federation of Schools for Parents and Educators (FNEPE), one in two adolescents sleeps less than seven hours per night, when they need at least nine hours of sleep. . Rather than the absurd ideas of sleepmaxxing, the solution to better sleep might be to start quitting TikTok before bed.
